Nana’s 3 Jars: Giving Generously | Review

Originally published in Learning Tangent Homeschooling Magazine, Spring 2015

In the first book in the Nana’s 3 Jars series, Charlie and Emma go for a visit with their grandmother, Nana. They love to visit Nana, and always look forward seeing her and all of her animals. On this occasion, they see three jars on the counter, each containing coins and labeled, “Saving, Spending, and Giving.” Nana answers all of their questions about the jars and their purposes, explains that when you help others you are really helping yourself. It feels good to help other people.

Charlie and Emma decide they would like to help someone, and Nana suggests they make cookies and take them to the local veteran’s center. So, from the Giving jar, they take money to buy the necessary supplies to make chocolate chip cookies. They enjoy their time giving away the homemade cookies, and discuss the importance of giving.

Giving Generously is a great addition to any family’s library, regardless of faith; the story is well done and very sweet, the principle of giving is universal, and money management is a necessary skill. The illustrations are quite beautiful and attractive to young (and not so young) children. In learning a simple way to manage money with three separate jars, kids can easily find ways to help others simply by putting a little into each. Included in the book is Nana’s chocolate chip cookie recipe (which we enjoyed!), and labels that are ready to be cut out and added to your own jars.

My twins liked that the book taught a lesson in a fun way, and loved the illustrations. As David said, “I liked that it taught you something. Even though I already know it’s good to give, I like the way the book taught it.”

Nana’s 3 Jars: Giving Generously is available on Amazon for $12.95, and the second book in the series, Nana’s 3 Jars: Saving Pennies became available on February 28, with the third book expected in the Fall of this year. We were given this copy for review, but as with many of the review items we receive, would happily purchase it.
